Council approves automated entry gate contract for public works facility
Summary
Council approved a contract to install an automated main-entry gate with a card-reader system at the public works facility to improve security and access logging; staff said in-house work reduced the external scope and saved about $100,000. The contract amount was not to exceed $145,000.

The council approved a contract for an automated main-entry gate at the public works facility and temporary fire station access point, a measure staff said will improve security and allow logging of card access.
Staff described the system and said initial outside prices approached $250,000 but by performing several tasks in-house the city reduced the external scope and received a low bid of roughly $145,000. "By doing a lot of that work in house with existing resources, we were able to bid a much smaller scope of work," staff said when recommending the contract award to Avtec with a not-to-exceed amount of $145,000.
Committee member (Speaker 1) moved to approve the resolution authorizing a contract with Avtec for the automated gate. The motion was seconded and passed on a roll-call vote with Council members Taylor, Barton, Wilson and Wadman recorded as yes. A council member thanked staff for the in-house savings.
The contract covers supply and installation of the automated gate and card-reader system; staff said additional work tied to permanent facilities or future construction would require separate approvals.
