Board restricts choice-out students, approves maintenance plan, calendar, and policy readings

At its Sept. 18 meeting the Lopatcong Township Board of Education approved several operational and policy items affecting enrollment choice, facilities, and governance.
Choice-out restriction and maintenance: the board approved R-049-26 limiting choice-out students to 10% of a grade level or 15% of total enrollment, a change intended to manage classroom capacity and enrollment balance. Trustees also approved the district’s annual comprehensive maintenance plan and M-1 for 2025–26 and authorized submission of the plan to the New Jersey Department of Education.
Calendar, MOA and facility uses: the board approved a revised 2025–26 district calendar and ratified the Uniform State Memorandum of Agreement Between Education and Law Enforcement Officials. The board approved multiple facility uses (e.g., ES Haunted Gymnasium Oct. 24–31; Rudy Cervani Jazz Band weekly at MS band room; MS Drama rehearsals), contingent on receipt of required paperwork.
Volunteer list and abstention: R-048-26 (September volunteer list) was approved, with Pamela Thomas recorded as having abstained on that item while other motions passed.
Policy readings: the board approved first readings for policies including Interdistrict Public School Choice (P5117) and Entrance Age (P5112), and second readings for a suite of policies and regulations (internal controls, budget preparation, special education Medicaid initiative, acceptable use of generative AI, among others).
Votes and next steps: most items were moved in grouped roll-call votes and carried. The board’s approvals require follow-up paperwork for facility users and notification/filing of the maintenance plan with the state education department.
