Tennessee House concurs with Senate resolution to recess early amid forecasted inclement weather

The Tennessee House of Representatives voted to concur with a Senate resolution to stand in recess at the close of business because of forecasted inclement weather, and lawmakers left the floor with contingency plans for committee schedules and bill-filing deadlines.
The clerk read Senate Joint Resolution 616, which states that the 114th General Assembly should "stand in recess at the close of business" and sets tentative reconvening times for the two chambers; the resolution was moved for concurrence by floor leadership and carried. "Be resolved by the Senate of the 114th General Assembly of the State that the 114th General Assembly stand in recess at the close of business... The House of Representatives reconvene on Monday, 02/02/2026 at 5PM," the clerk read on the floor.
Members asked how the recess would affect committee hearings and other deadlines. The Speaker told the chamber that Monday committee meetings would be canceled and Tuesday remained a possibility, with final decisions to be made after meteorological updates. "The committees for Monday will be canceled," the Speaker said, adding that the office would communicate changes "by a variety of means" including television, caucus texts and email if communications systems were available.
Leadership also moved to hold certain measures at the clerk's desk and suspended the rules to allow the administration until the close of business on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, to file the governor's appropriations bill and related budget documents. The motion to suspend rules carried without objection.
By the close of the floor session, leadership announced the House would stand in recess until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026, pursuant to the concurred resolution.
