Calera — Police Chief David Heich told the City Council the department has applied for a state homeland security grant through FEMA to buy two mobile camera trailers, requesting just under $100,000.
“These additional cameras would be used wherever we need them,” Chief Heich said. He described a single existing trailer deployed at community events, noting it was useful for deterring criminal activity and aiding dispatch in monitoring and relaying information to officers.
Chief Heich told the council the department has been aggressive in seeking grant funding over the past several years and credited staff who have supported grant writing. He estimated the department has secured equipment grants approaching or exceeding $1 million over the last five years.
The grant request under consideration is regional and includes partnerships with two neighboring cities; Chief Heich said the funding would be used for equipment rather than local taxpayer dollars.
What happens next: The city awaits award notification from the grant program. If awarded, staff will coordinate procurement and deployment of the trailers in coordination with dispatch and patrol operations.
