Washington Park approves $2,500 for municipal grounds rock after Townscape planting proposal

The Town of Washington Park Board on March 3 approved spending up to $2,500 to place rock behind the municipal building and heard a proposal from the Townscape Committee to replace front landscaping.
Derek Cooper of the Townscape Committee presented drawings for two planting beds at the municipal building, recommending camelia, holly and gardenia with mulch; the plan carried an estimated planting cost of $1,800, excluding fabric and edging. Cooper said the committee preferred to remove the existing plants immediately and proceed with purchase and installation once water-related issues are resolved.
Stuart Dudley provided a separate quote of $550 to remove the current plants, but board members said public works staff would perform removal if feasible. The Board asked staff to evaluate standing water near the building and consider guttering; that review will occur over the next two weeks before finalizing planting work.
Clerk April S. Alligood reported February deposits totaling $36,727.71 and other town account balances. Mayor pro tem Jeff Peacock moved to authorize the rock purchase, Commissioner Lee Bowen seconded the motion, and the Board approved it unanimously.
The decision to proceed with new plantings was not formalized during public input; the Townscape Committee update will be placed on a future regular agenda so the Board may vote on a planting budget and related specifications.
