The Mannington Township Board of Health was told on Oct. 3 that the Animal Adoption Center will not renew its contract, which expires March 1, 2025, Chairman Dunham said at the start of the meeting.
The announcement came as Dunham read a letter from the center: "They are not going to renew their contract and it expires March 1st, 2025," he said. The board noted that email and phone outreach has been made to several nearby facilities, including Voorhees Animal Shelter, South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter, Salem County Humane Society and Gloucester County Animal Shelter; Dunham said Gloucester County and South Jersey Regional declined to take the contract or provide assistance. He described the issue as countywide and suggested contacting the State Health Department for help.
The item was presented as a status update rather than a formal action. No formal motion to accept or replace the contract was recorded; the board did not vote on a replacement provider or authorize expenditures at this meeting. Public comment was opened and closed by motion with no speakers. The meeting’s minutes show no additional public testimony on the shelter matter.
Procedural business at the meeting included a motion by Chairman Dunham, seconded by Asay, to approve the minutes of the Sept. 5, 2024 meeting; that motion carried. The board later adjourned at 5:45 p.m. after a motion to adjourn by Dunham, seconded by Asay. The meeting minutes were signed and filed by Amber Ayars, acting secretary.
Next steps were discussed only as suggestions: Dunham recommended reaching out to the State Health Department for assistance and staff outreach to county partners, but the transcript records no formal direction or assigned follow-up tasks. Any further measures, procurement of alternative shelter services, or formal contract actions were not taken at the Oct. 3 meeting and were listed as "not specified" in the minutes.
