The board said the existing northbound sign has been inconsistent and that DOT paperwork has approved installation of an additional temporary southbound sign. Mayor Pro Tem Leigh Anne Young summarized background steps taken earlier by Mayor Tracy Rodes, including consulting the Sheriff’s Office and DOT about specialized keys and maintenance. Commissioners said the signs’ data, retrievable via USB or Bluetooth and requiring no subscription, would be useful for the town as the Jackson County road project begins.
Town Clerk Stephanie Gibson had earlier reviewed the administrative steps for procurement and the board discussed quoted prices. Commissioner Collins presented cost estimates and argued the acquisition would provide objective speed and volume data to support future requests to DOT or county planners.
The motion to purchase passed without recorded opposition. The board also noted DOT requires email notice at least three days before installing an additional temporary sign and that additional signs must attach to posts already permitted by DOT.
Next steps: staff will arrange purchase and follow DOT notification procedures; the board set a fall planning session for Sept. 20 to discuss broader road and capital needs.
