Deputy Clerk reports election equipment updates, absentee return rate and HAVA grant application

Deputy Clerk Evelyn Bihl told the City of the Village of Clarkston City Council on Oct. 28 that election preparations are complete and some equipment upgrades have been made ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
Bihl said the public accuracy test was successfully completed and the Clerk’s Office will be open Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2 to assist voters. She reported the election equipment received a new communication SIM card and backup batteries and the city purchased new locking ballot storage bags. The city also applied for a HAVA grant to help pay for election-related expenses.
On absentee voting, Bihl reported 156 of 280 absentee ballots sent were returned, and 25 city voters cast ballots at an early voting center. She reminded the council that voter fraud is a felony punishable by fines, jail time and loss of voting privileges, information presented as part of the clerk’s update.
The update was delivered as part of the clerk’s section of the agenda; no formal action was recorded on election equipment or the grant application at this meeting.
