Wentworth Council orders magnetic locks for park gates after damage to arm operators

The Wentworth Town Council unanimously approved the purchase of two 600-pound magnetic locks for the entrance and exit gates at Wentworth Park, saying the locks offer a more practical deterrent than replacing fragile mechanical arm operators.
Finance Officer Yvonne Russell reviewed two quotes from RCI Doors for magnetic locks and a vehicle sensor. Council members noted the existing arm operators—plastic‑housed mechanical arms—were forcibly damaged from inside the park and “snapped under pressure,” leaving them vulnerable to failure if the arms alone were relied on. Russell told the council the magnetic locks would disengage during a power outage, allowing gates to be opened for safety access.
Councilmember Dennis Paschal III moved “We purchase two 600lb magnetic locks with mounting brackets for both gates.” Mayor Dennis Paschal Jr. seconded. The motion carried on a unanimous vote.
Council opted not to install the Optex virtual loop vehicle sensor included in one quote, concluding the magnetic locks alone would provide sufficient deterrence. The Council subsequently approved Budget Amendment No. 3 to reallocate General Fund amounts to cover the narrower purchase scope.
The council noted the quotes from RCI Doors are incorporated into the minutes and will be retained as part of the procurement record. There was no public comment on the item.
