Mantoloking commission advances Sustainable Jersey Bronze re‑certification and plans outreach, cleanups

Commissioner Barbara Hood Benz said she, Jan O’Malley, John Mooney and Mary Ellen Scalera are working on assigned portions of the submission with a targeted completion and release by the May 2025 deadline; Benz will circulate an updated submission planning spreadsheet to coordinators.
The commission discussed increasing use of newsletters and social media and suggested an MEC e‑mail blast encouraging residents to use provided dog‑waste bags. The group discussed enhanced recycling coordination with Scott at the Department of Public Works and proposed an MEC/Green Team table at the MYC July 4 parade staffed by volunteers and offering small merchandise and outreach activities such as a recycling game.
Members also reported recent cleanup work: Mary Ellen Scalera said the April 12 COA beach cleanup, captained by Peter Andruss, drew 16 volunteers and covered the entire beach despite poor weather; the April 19 Barnegat Bay Blitz, captained by Ed O’Malley, was described as successful though attendance figures were not available in the minutes. Patty Brand Garden upkeep is being handled by the DPW and a volunteer group called The Seaweeders.
Next steps include circulating the Sustainable Jersey submission spreadsheet and completing assigned submission sections ahead of the May 2025 deadline.
