The Skokie Appearance Commission on July 8 approved a narrow set of aesthetic changes for the McDonald's redevelopment at 5362 E Avenue, allowing a red composite background panel behind wall signage and red/yellow accents on ground directional signs.
Jim O'Gheen, an attorney representing McDonald's USA LLC, told commissioners the building demolition is complete and construction is under way. He said the design team is proposing the red panel strictly as a background for wall signs and is not changing the primary modern envelope of cool grays and white signage. Project representatives said sustainable features (including a rainscreen and previously presented landscape plan) remain unchanged from the prior approval in November.
Commissioners asked why the color change was proposed and whether other site plans had changed; O'Gheen said the site plan, landscaping and sustainability elements are unchanged and that the signage change is an aesthetic refinement made during construction. Staff said it had no objections to the proposed revisions. The commission voted to approve the signage and color adjustments; project representatives estimated opening in late 2026.
The motion approved minor aesthetic revisions only; prior approvals on site plan and landscaping remain in effect. Construction is ongoing; the applicant said the building is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026.
