Holland Middle School renovation to remove select cafeteria risers; six modular classrooms added to maintain learning

The Facilities Committee reviewed the Holland Middle School design‑development updates presented by Schrader Group.

Designers described removing two side concrete risers in the sunken cafeteria (while retaining the stage‑side risers), expanding the cafeteria floor and replacing riser finishes. Staff said work originally planned as a summer project will be incorporated into the construction contract to avoid redundant work and likely reduce the overall cost compared with separate summer work.

Schrader Group and district staff said six modular classrooms will be used on site, connected to the building; those modules will not include bathrooms and are intended to maintain learning areas for classes adjacent to construction. Designers said the modular strategy is intended to prevent schedule delay and minimize classroom disruption, and that final cost impacts are under review.

Board members noted the original DD estimate range of $13.4–$13.7 million and a current DD estimate reported in the meeting around $13.2 million. One board member flagged a public online post that claimed a $40 million project price and called that number inaccurate.

District staff said they remain tight to the contingency and will provide an updated DD estimate when the cost review by the construction estimator is complete.

Next steps: staff will update the board with any budget changes once the design‑development estimate is finalized and will return with recommendations prior to contract approvals.
