The Board of Education of the Wilkes County Administrative Unit voted Feb. 23 to appoint Assistant Superintendent Dr. Westley Wood as acting superintendent of Wilkes County Schools, effective immediately, the board said.
The emergency-called meeting was held at 4:00 PM at 613 Cherry Street in North Wilkesboro and was convened to designate an acting or interim superintendent pursuant to N.C. Gen. Stat. §115C-275 following the death of Superintendent D. Mark Byrd. The board approved the appointment on a motion by Mrs. Jammie Jolly, seconded by Mrs. Joan Caudill; the motion was “duly carried,” and no roll-call tally was recorded in the minutes.
Board Chairman Randall “Rudy” Holbrook, Vice‑Chairman Kirk Walker and board members Joan Caudill, Dr. Donna Cotton and Jammie Jolly were present. District leadership on hand included Dr. Westley Wood (Assistant Superintendent), Mrs. Callie Grubb (Chief Academic Officer), Mr. Zackary Greene (Director of Finance) and multiple other district directors and coordinators listed in the meeting record.
The minutes state that Dr. Wood’s appointment is effective immediately and that contract terms for the acting superintendent role will be determined and approved at a subsequent meeting. The meeting record lists media representatives and named guests in attendance and shows the board adjourned at 4:06 PM after completing the single action item.
The board’s action cites N.C. Gen. Stat. §115C-275, the statute referenced in the meeting notice that authorizes boards to designate interim leadership when a superintendent position becomes vacant. The record does not specify the vote tally by individual member names beyond noting the motion, second and that the motion carried.
The board said it will address contract terms and any additional administrative steps at a later meeting; no date for that meeting was specified in the emergency minutes.
