Wilkes County Schools secures two $50,000 CCAP grants; board approves MOU to preserve funds

Director of Facilities and Construction Bergie Speaks told the board on Feb. 9 that Wilkes County Schools received two grants—$50,000 each—through the Wilkes Soil and Water Community Conservation Assistance Program (CCAP) for Central Wilkes Middle School and Wilkes Central High School. The Soil & Water office also completed survey and design work at no charge, which the district said saved $78,300.
To preserve the CCAP grant funds for Central Wilkes Middle, the board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with property owner Jodi Jarvis that allows planned erosion‑control measures to cross onto her land. Board Member Joan Caudill moved to approve the MOU; Jammie Jolly seconded and the motion carried.
Facilities staff also reported construction punch‑list work nearly complete at West Wilkes and North Wilkes high schools, delivery of metal roofing for West Wilkes, DEQ review for a bus‑garage fueling area grading design, and an advertised RFQ for removal of underground storage tanks at ten district sites. A site meeting for interested parties is scheduled for the UST work.
Board members said the approvals will allow design and bidding to proceed and preserve grant matching requirements.
