Wilkes County Schools presented a draft strategic plan intended to guide district work from Jan. 2026 through Jan. 2029. District leaders told the board they intend to retain four central focus areas—Academic Achievement, Human Resource Development, Culture, and Facilities & Operations—after administrator review over the summer and ongoing fall meetings.
The district said the plan reflects summer conference work and administrator conversations during fall meetings and is being presented as a discussion item to solicit board input before finalization. The presentation described continued emphasis on improving student outcomes, professional growth for staff, strengthening school culture and ensuring facilities support modern educational practices.
Separately, the calendar committee presented proposed 2026–27 academic calendars. The primary proposal is a 164 student‑day calendar that meets North Carolina statutory requirements; the presentation noted the state law allowing the start of school no earlier than the Monday closest to Aug. 26, 2026. An alternate calendar with a different start date was provided for the board’s consideration.
Board members were asked to provide feedback as the district finalizes the strategic plan and selects a calendar.
