The Wilkes County Board of Education on Aug. 4 approved a series of facility contracts and construction updates that district staff said are intended to complete athletic and restroom renovations before the fall sports season.
Director of Facilities and Construction Bergie Speaks gave a project update across the high schools, describing new turf fields, track work, HVAC upgrades and ongoing renovations. Speaks said tennis courts at North Wilkes and West Wilkes have been graded and are ready for asphalt and that contractors plan to pave the courts in the coming weeks; the courts must cure for about 30 days before surfacing is applied.
On formal motions the board approved awarding the North Wilkes, East Wilkes and Central Wilkes middle‑school bathrooms and concession projects to Wilkes Renovations Inc. as the lowest bidder (Wilkes Renovations bid $55,000 for bathrooms only and $95,000 for bathrooms plus concessions at the two schools), with the board recommending a total contract award of $245,000 to be paid from Window World funds. The board also awarded the East Wilkes High School paving project to Mathis Paving for $54,175 to remove and repave damaged asphalt and improve drainage.
Speaks noted that weather challenges have complicated timelines and that portable toilets will be used if bathroom projects are not completed before early football and soccer home games. Contractors named in proposals included VPC, Wilkes Renovations, Dylan Bauguss Construction, Mathis Paving, Shore Grading and Mathis Grading; the minutes record Wilkes Renovations and Mathis Paving as the awarded bidders.
The board approved the contracts by recorded motion; no dissenting votes were recorded in the meeting minutes.
