Wilkes County Schools present improvement plans for six low-performing schools; other plans approved

Six schools were identified as low-performing under state rules and presented improvement plans that the board will approve in December; the board approved other schools’ improvement plans at the Nov. 3 meeting.
Chief Academic Officer Callie Grubb told the Wilkes County Board of Education on Nov. 3 that, as defined in G.S. 115C-105.37, schools receiving a D or F performance grade and meeting specified growth criteria are identified as low-performing and must develop improvement plans, notify parents, and submit plans to the state after local board approval.
Grubb identified six low-performing schools: Boomer Ferguson Elementary, C.C. Wright Elementary, Mount Pleasant Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, North Wilkesboro Elementary, and West Wilkes Middle School. Those schools presented their improvement plans during the meeting and the board will approve them at the Dec. 1 meeting before submission to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
The board approved the other school improvement plans presented that evening (those not listed as low-performing) on a motion by Mrs. Jammie Jolly, seconded by Mrs. Joan Caudill. Grubb also noted a set of schools currently designated as CSI or TSI-AT that require targeted actions for identified student subgroups and parent notifications.
Board members emphasized that low-performing school plans undergo additional oversight and that the district uses an online tool (NCStar) to manage continuous improvement plans and make them available for preview on school websites.
