Wilkes County board updates domicile and wireless-device policies to align with state guidance

The Wilkes County Board of Education on Nov. 3 approved revisions to Board Policy 4120 and replaced local Policy 4304 with Policy 4318 to bring local rules into alignment with state statutes and State Board guidance.
The revision to Policy 4120 edits domicile and residence language so the local policy mirrors current North Carolina statutes and State Board of Education policies. The board approved the change on a motion by Mr. Kirk Walker, seconded by Mrs. Jammie Jolly.
The board also approved replacing Policy 4304 with Policy 4318. Staff said the update incorporates legislative requirements enacted since the district’s last local policy revision in September 2014 and includes prohibitions on students using, displaying, or having wireless communication devices turned on during instructional time. The board approved that revision on a motion by Mrs. Joan Caudill, seconded by Dr. Donna Cotton.
Board members noted the changes were intended to align local policy with state-recommended language and statutory changes; the motions were recorded as carried in the meeting minutes.
