Wilkes County Schools board approves personnel changes, overnight trips and low-performing school plans

The Wilkes County Board of Education on Dec. 1 approved several routine but consequential items, including personnel actions, overnight student trips and school improvement plans for federally designated low-performing schools.
On a motion by Mrs. Jammie Jolly, seconded by Mrs. Joan Caudill, the board approved the Personnel Report, which recorded planned retirements and resignations and a promotion. The report lists four upcoming retirements: Shirley Anderson, Child Nutrition Inventory Specialist, retirement effective March 1, 2026 (30 years, 9 months); Jeffrey Call, custodian, retirement effective Jan. 1, 2026 (5 years, 9 months); Elaine Martin, administrative assistant in Maintenance, retirement effective March 1, 2026 (31 years, 3 months); and Melissa Minton, teacher at Mulberry Elementary School, retirement effective Jan. 1, 2026 (23 years, 5 months). The board approved the promotion of David Brown from custodian to lead custodian at West Wilkes High School.
The board also approved several out-of-county and overnight trips on a motion by Mr. Kirk Walker, seconded by Mrs. Jammie Jolly: North Wilkes High School women’s varsity basketball to Galax, Va., on Jan. 28, 2026; West Wilkes High School FFA to Louisville, Ky., Feb. 11–14, 2026; and Wilkes Early College High School 10th-grade trip to Wilmington, N.C., Apr. 22–24, 2026.
On a motion by Mrs. Joan Caudill, seconded by Mrs. Jammie Jolly, the board approved improvement plans for schools identified as low-performing (a D or F performance grade). The affected schools named by the board were Boomer Ferguson Elementary, C.C. Wright Elementary, Mount Pleasant Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, North Wilkesboro Elementary and West Wilkes Middle. The board noted each school’s plan is housed in NCStar and must specify actions to improve both school performance grade and growth and include parent notification requirements.
The meeting record shows the agenda and the Nov. 3, 2025 minutes were approved earlier in the session; motions to approve were described as “duly carried.” The meeting adjourned at 5:53 p.m. on a motion by Mr. Kirk Walker, seconded by Mrs. Joan Caudill.
The approvals recorded at this meeting are procedural steps that enable personnel transitions, student activities and the formal school-improvement process; the plans for low-performing schools remain in NCStar for review and implementation by district staff.
