LEAP reports steady Career Center use but warns of funding cut for next program year

Shelley Smith, Executive Director of LEAP, briefed the committee on workforce services on June 23, reporting that Washington County’s Career Center served 281 people between January and May 2026: 154 adults and 127 dislocated workers. Of those visitors, 209 received intensive services such as one‑on‑one counseling and resume assistance; 72 received basic services like computer access and job applications.
Smith said four people obtained GEDs this year and the center recently purchased GED‑prep software, though space for in‑house classes is limited. She told the committee the next program year begins July 1, 2026 and that WIOA funding for the center will be reduced by 12.32%, and added that the Saratoga‑Warren‑Washington Workforce Development Board will vote on its budget and is exploring consolidation with the Capital Region Workforce Development Board.
Smith said the center is continuing required follow‑up with clients to capture placement outcomes but noted follow‑up responses are inconsistent. The committee received the update as information; no committee action was taken.
