Winston-Salem public art committee names four finalists for MLK Jr. Community Center mural

The Winston-Salem Public Art Commission’s MLK Jr. Community Center Mural Committee on Jan. 7, 2026, selected four finalists to advance in a community-engagement-driven process to create a mural at the Boston-Thurmond Community Center.
The committee reviewed 91 applications submitted through Submittable and used a multi-round scoring process to narrow the field. Committee members said the top 22 applications had more than three reviewers scoring around 16 out of 20; three rounds of elimination led to four finalists: Bree Stallings, Nate Dee, Steven Teller and Trudy Tran.
The committee outlined next steps for the finalists: each will be invited to a two-day site visit in the Boston-Thurmond neighborhood that will include a bus tour led by committee member David West, a tour of community center facilities, a town-hall meeting with residents and an informal meal or coffee with committee members. The finalists will have two to three weeks after the visit to prepare presentations focused on community engagement and observations from their visit. Committee members said finalists should not submit mock-ups before the community engagement phase. Each finalist will receive a $1,300 honorarium to cover travel and creative labor.
The meeting also recorded a routine procedural vote to approve summary minutes from April 15, 2025 and Nov. 21, 2025; Delores Turner moved to approve, David West seconded and the committee voted “all in favor.”
The committee adjourned at 12:11 PM. The next public step is the scheduled site visits and the finalists’ presentations, after which the commission will determine the artist(s) selected to proceed with design and implementation.
