The Woodford County Planning Commission voted to amend Article 2 of the subdivision regulations to reduce the required spacing between fire hydrants from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet.
Planning staff explained the change came at the request of the Woodford County Volunteer Fire Department. “The chief wants that change or suggest that change to 1,000 feet that meets the ISO requirement, for community, it would help on our fire rating, and insurance rates,” planning staff member Steve said during the presentation.
The proposed language also clarifies that all lots shown on a preliminary plat must be within 1,000 feet of a hydrant so that the created lots meet the spacing standard. Commissioners discussed wording and a possible passive‑voice fix to make the requirement direct; staff agreed to edit the text for clarity. No members of the public spoke on the amendment.
After brief discussion, a commissioner moved to accept the amendment; the commission approved it by voice vote and thanked the advisory committee and the fire chief for their work. Staff noted the advisory committee had recommended the change and that the commission has sole authority over subdivision regulation amendments.
