Medford Lakes board approves hires, out-of-district placements and grant submissions

The Medford Lakes School District Board of Education approved personnel hires and several finance items during its Aug. 23 meeting.
In personnel actions moved by Kevin Kerfoot and seconded by Julia Moore, the board approved multiple staff appointments, including Warren Vanderzee for the Building & Ground Supervisor position at a prorated salary of $75,000; teacher and aide appointments and stipend assignments were also approved. The addendum added Laura Jones as a lunch/recess aide and extended paid administrative leave for employee #15130. The personnel motions passed by roll call with Ayes from Kim Bezanis, Robert Brittain, Kevin Kerfoot and Julia Moore.
On finance and contracts, the board approved payment of bills, budget transfers for May and June 2023, and accepted the Board Secretary and Treasurer’s reports. The business administrator certified compliance with N.J.A.C. financial reporting requirements. The board approved two out-of-district special-education placements: student #101737 at Kingsway Learning Center for $58,910.40 plus $32,400 in extraordinary services, and student #101325 at Y.A.L.E. School North, Inc., for $58,113 for the 2023–24 school year.
The board approved submission of multiple grants: ESEA Title I ($9,055), Title IIA ($5,426), IDEA Basic ($121,788), IDEA Pre-School ($6,095), and a school-security grant under the Securing Our Children’s Future Bond Act / Alyssa’s Law compliance ($27,751). The board also approved ARP ESSER III mental-health grant awards of $1,000 each to three staff members for social-emotional learning curriculum development.
Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dent thanked volunteers and contractors who assisted district facilities work, noting specifically that "Mike Scott from LandVision" and custodial staff helped prepare the Secret Garden at Nokomis. The finance and contract motions carried by recorded vote (4 ayes, 0 nays, 1 absent).
