Stedman police report sharp increases in recorded incidents, arrests and calls for service in 2025

Police Chief W. Tracy Jackson presented the department’s year-end report to the board on Jan. 8, reporting substantial increases in recorded activity for 2025 compared with 2024.
Jackson said Stedman Police Department recorded 105 incident reports in 2025, up from 36 in 2024, and responded to four crashes within town limits (two in 2024). The department handled 1,008 calls for service in 2025, up from 657 in 2024. The memorandum included percentage comparisons that the department describes as reflecting changes in reporting and activity: “felony arrests increased by 700%, misdemeanor arrests increased by 400%, and traffic citations increased by 300%.”
Jackson told the board that some of the apparent increases reflect the agency’s improved internal tracking after prior years without comprehensive local stats; he also noted the department has added officers. To address staffing needs, the department is recruiting additional part-time officers for nighttime coverage and exploring grant opportunities that could support hiring a full-time deputy. Jackson also reported difficulties with Cumberland County deputies covering certain evening shifts since the county moved to electronic time sheets; he recommended the board consider coverage options in the next fiscal-year budget if trends continue.
The board took the report for review; no motion was recorded at the Jan. 8 meeting. The chief provided the written memorandum as part of the meeting packet.
