Town Manager Mike Koser briefed the Board of Commissioners on several transportation and lighting projects during the March 2 meeting. Koser said the NCDOT Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) project will add crosswalks at the Main Street/State Street and Monroe Street/West Main Street intersections, including a south-side crosswalk on State Street and crosswalks on the west side of West Main Street and the north side of Monroe Street.
Koser also updated the board on Project R-5909, which will add sidewalks on State Street extending toward Unifi Industrial Road; a new design firm has been hired and the project may overlap with the TAP improvements. Mayor Eddie T. Norman asked whether R-5909 could discourage semi-trucks from using Main Street; Koser said that discouraging truck traffic has been discussed and the mayor requested that town staff consider a flashing sign to encourage trucks to use Unifi Industrial Road.
Koser reported that Duke Energy will install new bulbs on Monroe Street light poles and add an additional light at Monroe and West Main to improve illumination near Muddy River Tavern. The combined projects aim to improve pedestrian safety and street lighting in town corridors.
The board did not take formal votes on these projects at the March 2 meeting; project scheduling and design work will proceed through the appropriate NCDOT and utility processes.
