The South Zanesville Village Council voted April 23 to authorize purchase of playground equipment for the South Town Park and discussed applying for an ODNR Nature Works grant to fund a later phase of park improvements.
Council members said rising tariffs have pushed equipment costs higher, prompting consensus that the village should order playground equipment immediately to avoid further price hikes. Two vendor quotes were presented so the purchase could proceed without formal bidding. A project binder with equipment images, a checklist and a revised budget was distributed to council members.
Council discussed site preparation responsibilities, noting the village will handle grading and leveling and that dirt deliveries are already in progress. Equipment placement will be coordinated with the vendor AAA State of Play using GPS pin drops, and installation can be scheduled promptly once the order is placed.
Council also discussed pursuing the ODNR Nature Works grant, which is open for applications until June 2. The village plans to seek $20,000 in grant funds that require a 25% match ($5,000); awarded funds would be available in 2026 and would be used for a separate phase of park improvements such as an entrance sign, a water feature, fencing behind the basketball court, benches and trash containers. Fundraising options, including business sponsorships in exchange for recognition plaques or signs, were discussed. Mayor Barbara J. Lloyd volunteered to promote the project on WYBZ radio’s “Talk of the Town.”
Councilmember Greg Gibson moved to authorize the purchase of the playground equipment; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Mike Nunley. Recorded votes were Greg Gibson — yea; Mike Nunley — yea; Ed Harlan — yea; Kim St. Clair — yea. The motion carried.
