The Board of Selectmen on Aug. 25 accepted $1,595 raised to support new bicycle signs and cycling-safety activities in Springfield. Linda Howes told the board the money is earmarked for signs, a bike rodeo and possibly a safe‑cycling class; she said the Brain Injury Prevention Center at Dartmouth will provide helmets for the rodeo.
The fundraising update came during a scheduled appointment with Howes, who said she has submitted a Right-of-Way application to the state Department of Transportation and expects to review sign locations with DOT officials. The signs themselves were ordered at an estimated cost of about $700; Howes said excess funds would be used for advertising and event expenses. The board voted to accept the total donation into the town’s general fund, with the money earmarked specifically for bicycle programs. Amy Lewis moved to accept the funds; Jen Roberts seconded and both voted in favor.
Zoning Coordinator and Health Officer Tim Bray asked who would be responsible for replacing signs if lost or stolen; Howes said DOT told her the town would not be required to replace signs in such cases. The board noted Neal will handle installation and ongoing maintenance, and Howes requested to be present when DOT marks locations. Copies of checks will be kept on file and all invoices will be submitted to the town office for payment.
Next steps include DOT’s on‑site review of locations and pickup of signs and posts by Howes; the invoice will be issued after pickup. The Selectmen did not set a separate implementation date at the meeting.
