Superintendent reports on facilities work, QSAC submission and community events; board hears bus-safety concern

Superintendent Michael Jordan briefed the Maywood Board of Education on Nov. 20 about operational and community items across the district, and a public commenter raised a traffic-safety concern.
Jordan said the district will honor November Students of the Month and that the first round of classroom observations has been completed. He reported that roofing upgrades and addition work continue at Memorial School while HVAC upgrades and STEM classroom construction progress at Maywood Avenue School (MAS). Jordan also announced the district’s toy drive for pediatric cancer patients at Tomorrows Children's Fund and thanked PTO groups for supporting recent events including Trunk O’ Treat and grade-level activities.
He noted extracurricular updates — final rosters for cheerleading and boys’ and girls’ basketball — and that MAS students will participate in the Little Ferry Holiday Tournament in two weeks. Jordan recounted community service events including the MAS leaf-raking blitz (27 homes) and district observances for veterans; he described evacuation drills conducted with the Maywood Police Department and noted that the South Bergen Jointure (SBJ) conducted a flawless evacuation to the MAS large gym.
On accountability, Jordan said the district completed preliminary QSAC required work by the Nov. 15 deadline, uploading 127 documents and submitting the self-assessment and declaration pages; an onsite visit date was not yet provided.
During the public-comment period, board member Ms. Stelter stated that cars are passing school buses and that she has reported the issue to police several times, a concern the minutes record without further board discussion.
Jordan also reminded families of Parent/Teacher Conferences on Nov. 21 (early dismissal schedule) and listed holiday concert appearances, including caroling at Provident Bank on Dec. 6 and senior-center visits.
