Maywood updates curriculum, transport code and introduces digital hall passes for 2024–25

Superintendent Michael Jordan reported several operational and curricular changes the board will consider implementing for the 2024–25 school year.

The district will change its K–5 English language arts program from HMH Journeys to HMH Into Reading to adopt a readers‑and‑writers workshop model and a more robust technology platform; materials are expected to arrive and the shift will take place this school year. Core content and specialty area curricula are complete and scheduled for adoption in August, according to the minutes.

The Board approved a revised School Transportation Code of Conduct to be emailed to high school families; the code will require parents and students to read and sign a consent form acknowledging review of the revisions.

To limit hallway traffic and better monitor student movement, the district will introduce the Minga App’s Digital Hall Pass feature for grades 4–8 at the start of the year, with staff and students able to access the app on district devices and personal devices as appropriate. The superintendent said other app features will be considered after a year‑one pilot. The district will also require preregistration for Morning Extra Help via a Google form to improve supervision and staff planning; parents will receive a printable confirmation to serve as an entrance ticket or staff will validate digital submissions for students who cannot print.

Summer programs (ESY, remediation, Junior Explorers Camp, art, band and basketball camps) are being held at Memorial School while construction continues at Maywood Avenue School, and the minutes list ongoing roofing, fire system and HVAC projects across both buildings.

These changes will be implemented administratively; adoption of curricula is scheduled for the August board meeting.
