During public comment, residents raised multiple concerns about facilities and funding. Corey Landante urged the board to reconsider the plan to use Capital Reserve funds for HVAC repairs and questioned the status and responsibilities for the Nokomis playground. Landante described the Capital Reserve use as an improper funding choice for the district.
Business Administrator Nikolas Vrettos said he would provide the playground inspection report from the district’s insurance carrier to clarify condition and responsibility. Kathryn McNeil said the district did not allow a community-hosted "meet the candidates" event and asked the board to be aware; Superintendent Dr. Anthony V. Dent said the district provided a facility request form but no form was submitted.
Ben Wilson later asked why the district was denied Pre-K grant funding, how much would be needed to guarantee the program, and whether reapplication is required; Dr. Dent said eligibility depends on special education needs, staffing (teachers and aides), furniture and playground considerations, and that once accepted a district typically would not need to reapply annually.
Why it matters: Community members pressed the board on use-of-funds choices and transparency about facilities responsibility. The district promised follow-up documentation (playground inspection report) and described conditions that affect Pre-K grant eligibility, but no immediate policy reversal or new funding decision was made at the meeting.
What’s next: The board has not taken formal action to reallocate funds; administrators will provide the insurance inspection report and continue conversations about pre-K funding requirements and facilities responsibilities.
