Planning staff seeks steering-committee nominations and reports surge in comprehensive-plan survey responses

City planning staff at the July 9 Planning Commission meeting asked commissioners to review and advise on organizations and potential nominees for a comprehensive-plan steering committee that will guide the rewrite of Conway's comprehensive plan.
Staff said the steering-committee list currently names organizations and categories (not specific individuals) and that staff will reach out to nominees and return a final list for official appointment at the next meeting. Staff proposed the first steering-committee meeting in late September to provide an overview of the plan's purpose, review draft elements and begin element-focused subcommittees.
Planning staff also reported a surge in responses to an online community survey: the tally rose from about 54 responses to roughly 250 after the survey was posted on social media earlier the same day. Staff said respondents skew toward homeowners without children and identified traffic, parking, housing diversity and open-space or park creation among the top concerns. Staff discussed outreach avenues (downtown kiosks, businesses, youth council, festivals and social media) and asked commissioners to recommend additional community groups to contact, including senior, disability and faith-based organizations.
Commissioners supported broader outreach and suggested contacting local nonprofits, Conway Downtown Alive and doing on-site recruitment at community events and Conway High School athletic gatherings. Staff said they plan to keep the survey open through Sept. 15 unless outreach needs require extension.
