RSU 23 meeting: resignations accepted, playground inspections to be scheduled, and new school-year updates

At its Sept. 9, 2014 meeting RSU 23 accepted a resignation, heard a parent's concern about playgrounds and directed an inventory and inspection plan, and received a superintendent report on 16 new staff, proficiency-based curriculum rollout for the class of 2018, open-house dates and deployment of more than 200 iPads.
The RSU 23 School Board accepted letters of resignation from Diane Martin and approved the minutes of the July 16, 2014 meeting during its Sept. 9, 2014 session at Old Orchard Beach Town Hall.
During public session, parent Michelle Violet asked the board to consider the condition of playground equipment across the district. Chair Gary Curtis asked Superintendent Lloyd Crocker to inventory playground equipment with Mr. Kelley and to develop an inspection plan; Jerome Plante suggested the Young Cadets might be used as a community-service resource to assist with inspections or maintenance.
Superintendent Lloyd Crocker reported that the school year opened with 16 new staff members and that orientation was facilitated by Barbara Fletcher. Workshop days on Aug. 27 and 28 included district opening activities and a K-12 effort on Proficiency Based Education; the minutes state the class of 2018 will be the first cohort to receive these diplomas. Open houses were held Aug. 27-28 and Crocker said more than 200 iPads were deployed at Old Orchard Beach High School.
A revised financial report in the board packet noted the summer school budget exceeded planned costs by about 6 percent, which the Finance Committee said should be considered in next year's budget planning. Chair Gary Curtis also congratulated the high school football team and reminded potential candidates that 30 signatures are required to appear on the ballot by Sept. 25.
Board members were told a proposed gift to the Old Orchard Beach High School scholarship fund is being reviewed and will be brought to the board for acceptance at a future meeting. The meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
