The RSU 23 board heard an update on Adult Education at its Dec. 17, 2014 meeting: the fall semester enrolled 586 adult learners, and enrichment and vocational classes generated $36,000 in revenue, with $12,000 reinvested into the program so academic courses could be offered free of charge. The winter semester was projected to offer about 150 classes, and the program aims to introduce roughly 30 new classes each semester.
Committee reports covered youth, policy and wellness matters. Meghan Ward summarized At Risk Youth Committee work after three former students described reasons for placement in alternative programming; the committee is focusing on easing the transition from eighth to ninth grade, increasing staff and parent awareness of alternative programming, aligning high school policies with a student-centered philosophy, and expanding career-pathway outreach.
Mike Flaherty reported that the Policy Committee reviewed the MSMA required policies, recommendations from the Great Schools Partnership on proficiency-based education, technology-policy drafts from Drummond and Woodsum, and guidance from the Maine Principals Association. Athletic trainer Ursula Vollkommer-Haley is reviewing the district Concussion Policy and will return it to committee when ready.
Karen Michaud presented Wellness Subcommittee recommendations and described edits informed by Rick Matthews and the Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition to align district language with federal requirements under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and with regional '5210' health-promotion recommendations. The subcommittee intends to complete reviews of tobacco and substance-abuse policies by the end of the school year.
