Olivia council holds first readings on driveway width and accessory‑structure setbacks, sets public hearing

The Olivia City Council conducted first readings of two proposed amendments to Chapter 152 of the city code and called a public hearing for further input.
Staff explained Ordinance 11 would change the maximum curb access driveway width from 24 feet to 36 feet to reflect current construction trends (three‑car garages and wider driveways). "They're proposing in this ordinance to change that from 24 feet wide to 36 feet wide along the curb," a staff member said. City engineers raised no safety concerns, staff reported.
Ordinance 12 would adjust accessory building setbacks so that small accessory structures (about 200 square feet or less) could be placed abutting an attached garage rather than requiring a 10‑foot separation. Staff said the planning commission recommended the change to make the code more development‑friendly and to accommodate storage needs.
The council approved Resolution 70 to call a public hearing on the ordinances; the hearing must be held before final adoption. Staff said the public hearing will allow residents to comment on driveway width and accessory building placement before the council takes final action.
