Student leaders, college partners plan Jan. 30 winter outing in Little Big Forest

Maggie Forestall, a member of the Little Big Forest Stewardship Committee, said T-shirts for students were delivered Jan. 22 and will be worn at a school event on Jan. 23 as the committee finalizes plans for a Jan. 30 field trip to the Little Big Forest. The outing will include winter-hiking safety, fire-building and grilling of hot dogs and s'mores, snowshoeing and outdoor recreation; bus transportation will be arranged with funds provided by a Little Big Forest grant to the Town Conservation Commission.
"What is your favorite winter gear?" the Student Leaders asked during roll call; participants listed boots with spikes, insulated boots, crampons, wool socks, a heavy coat and a winter cap as essential items for staying warm. The sharing exercise set a safety-focused tone for the planned outing.
The committee said the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for SAU24 was invited to join the Jan. 22 outing, and Amanda Dastoli, a professor at New England College in Henniker and a parent at James Faulker Elementary School in Stoddard, plans to bring NEC students to mentor and share outdoor education expertise. Maggie Forestall said she and Amanda will continue the collaboration between NEC and James Faulker Elementary School to support student mentoring and outdoor recreation programming.
Committee members noted the school renewed the required permit with the Stoddard Fire Department for outdoor campfires. The committee also prepared a visitor log for the cabin used for student outings and recommended installing a second physical visitor notebook at the information kiosk next to the Shedd Hill Road parking area, in addition to the online Google document used to record student experiences.
Next steps: T-shirts will be distributed Jan. 22, the field trip is planned for Jan. 30, and committee members will confirm bus logistics and on-site supervision in the coming week.
