Sugar Hill rep: Cooley Jericho parking plan cost-prohibitive; trail work to continue

Dan Kenerson, Sugar Hill’s representative to the Cooley Jericho Town Forest, told the Selectmen on June 16 that routine trail work (including water bars and walkway replacement) will continue but that a proposed parking-area project proved costly: bids came back with a minimum around $200,000 and were deemed cost-prohibitive.
Kenerson said there were no reported parking problems this past winter, and he reported that new owners of the abutting land will not allow access from the Landaff side and restrict their property to snowmobile use. He also said the Appalachian Mountain Club (ACT) will prepare an updated management plan for the forest.
Why it matters: The high estimated cost for a parking area and limits on abutter access affect options for improving trail access and long-term management of the Cooley Jericho Town Forest. The board did not approve a parking project at the meeting.
