The Sugar Hill Selectmen said the Crane Hill bridge project drew six bidders and the low bidder has been identified, but the town will not award the contract until Hoyle & Tanner, the State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation and the town engineer complete their reviews.
Selectman Chris Ellms and Town Administrator Jennifer Gaudette told the board the town is working with Woodsville Bank on project financing. The meeting record states the contractor may work through the winter and that the town anticipates the project will begin in August and be completed by Oct. 15, 2026.
Public comment at the meeting raised questions about buyers for the old bridge and the presence of lead paint on that structure. The Selectmen noted those concerns and said abatement and disposal methods will be governed by applicable state and federal rules and by contract terms to be finalized during the bid‑review process.
The project schedule includes a six‑week closure of Streeter Pond from Route 18 to the Crane Hill Bridge; officials said detour and public‑access details will be finalized with the contractor. No award or contractor name was recorded in the minutes; the board said a formal contract award will follow the engineer and DOT reviews.
Next steps: the town will await the engineering and NH DOT reviews of the low bid and then decide whether to award the contract. The Selectmen did not record a vote to award the contract at the June 30 meeting.
