The Board of Public Works and Safety on July 6 approved a new police standard operating procedure to permit officers to use pistol‑mounted red‑dot optics and voted to reactivate a previously retired departmental K‑9.
The mayor said staff had circulated a draft SOP and Police Chief Mont described the change as officer‑driven: officers may purchase red‑dot sights at their own expense but must qualify annually with both the red‑dot optic and traditional iron sights. "If the guys elect to get the red dot sights, they have to qualify every year with the red dot sides and the traditional iron sides," Chief Mont said.
Chief Mont also presented a contract to repurchase and return a retired Belgian Malinois K‑9 to active duty after the prior handler left for the county. The chief said the dog is about nine years old, has a recent veterinary note confirming fitness, and that the trainer recommends at least two more years of service. A board member moved to bring the canine out of retirement; a second was given and the motion passed with the board saying "aye."
The board discussed paperwork and recertification steps; Chief Mont said the K‑9 has the trainer's evaluation and required documentation and that the dog is already recertified. The mayor noted the reactivation will add capacity to the department's K‑9 program.
The board approved both items in roll‑call voice votes. The approved SOP will be assigned a policy number and staff will finalize the K‑9 contract and administrative paperwork.
