Council creates workgroup after spate of vehicle break-ins, indecent-exposure reports
Summary
Following reports from Montgomery County police of indecent exposure and multiple vehicle break-ins, the council created a six-person follow-up workgroup to meet with the county Community Services Officer and recommend responses including reactivating Neighborhood Watch and other deterrents.
Councilor Kriss Grisham relayed police information about recurring indecent-exposure incidents and a series of vehicle thefts, vandalism and ransackings. Police requested eyewitness reports to strengthen investigations. Council discussion included forming a safety committee, reactivating Neighborhood Watch, hiring a security guard, increasing surveillance (including Ring cameras), and greater community involvement.
Peter Nagrod moved to create a workgroup to follow up on the criminal problems; Mary Warfield seconded, and the motion passed 5-0. Mayor John Compton named Councilor Kriss Grisham and residents Adam Eig, Howard Harrary, Sylvie Favret and Patty Klein to the group; the group will meet with Officer Melanie Romano, Community Services Officer for District 6, to discuss police actions and recommendations to discourage criminal activity.
The minutes also record a Mayor reminder on rules restricting driving and parking on town walkways and that a reminder should appear in the next Town Bulletin. The council did not authorize paid security at this meeting; the workgroup will develop recommendations for council consideration.
