Officials say Bethune Complex needs comprehensive renovation as departments are relocated

Johnson reported multiple maintenance issues at the complex, including mold growth, water intrusion, deteriorated windows, damaged flooring and failing gutters. He said recent industrial hygiene assessments determined the mold was not related to previous flooding but appears to stem from moisture intrusion around windows, poor airflow and damp carpeting. Chair L. Roller stressed that replacing windows and addressing ventilation would be critical to preventing future mold growth.
Johnson suggested moving Social Services into the former school board area to improve first-floor accessibility for elderly and disabled clients and avoid elevator-reliant access; he noted elevator reliability remains a concern. Committee members agreed the complex likely requires a comprehensive renovation instead of isolated repairs, though Brade cautioned that temporary relocation during construction would present logistical challenges.
Next steps: Staff will gather additional consultant recommendations and cost estimates, and the committee agreed to plan for a coordinated renovation that addresses roofing, windows, HVAC and interior repairs together.
