The council reviewed a municipal gas customer-service policy after staff reported contact from the Georgia Public Service Commission about municipal gas-system policies. Interim City Manager Angela Redding said the city adopted a gas customer-service policy in 2013 but did not refile or refresh it in 2020; policy reviews are expected about every seven years.
Council members discussed several potential updates: aligning deposit refunds with other utilities (the 2013 policy refunds deposits after 24 consecutive months of timely payment, while the council discussed simplifying administration by refunding on account closeout or disconnection), updating billing and notice language to include mailed bills and e-billing, and confirming operational disconnection procedures and weather-related restrictions against policy requirements. Staff were asked to confirm current practices and bring recommended policy language back to the council for consideration.
No formal policy change was adopted during the work session; staff follow-up was requested prior to council action.
