The Gullah Geechee CDC scheduled a strategic-plan workshop for July 15 and outlined a timetable for drafting and approving updates aimed at driving measurable outcomes on neighborhood stabilization, partnerships, community education, access to capital and youth training.
Executive Director Mr. Boxley said the process will solicit board and public feedback at the July workshop, produce a draft by the Aug. 19 meeting and return a final document in September for town-council review. He urged the board to focus on strategy updates that produce measurable results; "Goal number 1, ensure the stabilization and preservation of Gullah Geechee neighborhoods," he said, and asked directors to rework strategies that will support those goals.
The board also discussed funding strategies for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Staff highlighted an account at the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry for emergency storm-response donations and ongoing outreach to federal and state legislators and philanthropic partners, including the RBC Heritage Foundation. One member reminded the board that the CDC received a $5,000,000 state allocation and advocated reporting outcomes back to the legislative delegation to sustain support.
Directors emphasized the need for a narrow set of catalyst projects to attract private funding and to build credibility for larger funders. Members proposed Bryant Road and the CDC’s new office as candidate demonstration projects and urged that giving be broadened beyond dollars to include time, talent and in-kind contributions. Several members recommended that board fundraising expectations be clarified in the strategic-planning process so directors can lead by example and help solicit private support.
The board did not adopt new funding commitments at the meeting but directed staff to incorporate targeted, measurable strategies into the July workshop and to return with options for board-led fundraising responsibilities.
