The presentation, shown to the council and members of the public, outlined new traffic signals, pedestrian countdown heads, radar vehicle detection, high‑visibility crosswalks and 19 ADA‑compliant curb ramps. The presenter showed maps of the proposed configuration and said the work is part of an ongoing NJDOT grant project.
The presentation prompted questions from residents about nearby conditions not included in the project. Resident Brenda Franks said sidewalks on Higgans Avenue are in poor condition and that trees force children to walk in the street. Officials responded that the Safe Routes grant does not extend to those streets. Mayor Thomas Weaver said he would ask code enforcement to inspect the sidewalks, and the council noted the county would temporarily fix a hump over the railroad; the presenter and council said the railroad hump would be made permanent when the NJDOT project is completed.
Council members and the presenter also said traffic studies tied to the project indicated backups on routes such as Gibbsboro Road to Erial Road are not within the scope of this grant and were found not to be a significant safety issue for the intersection improvements funded by the grant.
The presentation was part of the meeting’s public information session; no formal vote on the project occurred at the April 21 meeting. The council moved on to other agenda items after the Q&A.
