Fire department members press commission for clarity on promotion scoring; officials say certification points intended to total 15

Lehman said the rules’ language (Rule 8 and Section 6 d–f) indicates a maximum of 15 points for certification but that TPS testing on March 3 was scored out of 20, producing perceived disparities that benefit paramedics by about five points on promotional packets. "I don't think it's fair that paramedics get basically essentially 5 extra points," he said. (Michael Lehman)
A staff member who identified as an advanced EMT explained how the scoring on individual items translated to his calculated totals and confirmed his packet showed a higher raw score under the March testing. Commissioners acknowledged the concern, said the commission's intent was that certification points total no more than 15 regardless of individual test scales, and committed to follow up with documentation and a copy of the testing letter so members understand how the total is computed.
The commission did not change policy at the meeting; instead, staff and commissioners said they would review the written materials and provide clarification to ensure future promotional scoring aligns with Rule 8 and Section 6 d–f.
