Fire commission reports passed ISO inspection, grant pursuit and asks Village to bill homeowner for salt used at fire scene

At the June 10 meeting the Board received the Hewitt Area Fire Commission update. Commissioners reported the recent ISO inspection passed with one quarter remaining, that there were 62 fire calls in May 2026 compared with 112 in May 2025, and that fire trucks would be serviced and inspected by the Department of Transportation. The department plans to apply for a non-matching DNR grant and will participate in Farm Tech Days in July.
The commission said it will donate old breathing apparatus that no longer meet U.S. standards to another country at no cost to the department and will reestablish a personnel committee with Travis Wienke, John Salzmann and a fire department member serving on it.
The commission requested that the Village bill the homeowner whose house burned for salt used on icy roads so the department could fight the fire; the minutes state that in future the Commission should bill the homeowner first and, if unpaid, the Village would intercede, similar to the process for ambulance calls. The Board did not record a separate vote on accepting the recommendation at this meeting.
