Selectmen consider options as Assessment Review Board lacks full membership; recanted abatement for Stein noted

Selectman Daniel Staples reported vacancies on the Assessment Review Board and said the Selectmen will try one more month to recruit before possibly dissolving the board and sending appeals to the Knox County Board; Selectman Staples also related that Board Chairman Robert Patterson recanted a March 13 abatement request for Karl Stein after learning Stein was not entitled to relief.
Selectman Daniel Staples raised concern that the Town of Cushing Assessment Review Board did not have a full membership and recommended attempting recruitment for one more month. Staples told the Selectmen that, if vacancies remain, the board may dissolve and any appeals would be handled by the Knox County Board because of the county board’s expertise.
Staples also reported that he had spoken with Robert Patterson, chairman of the Assessment Review Board, who submitted a recantation of his March 13, 2014 letter that had asked Tax Collector Irene Vinal to grant an abatement for Karl Stein. According to the minutes, after consultation with Assessors Agent Garnett Robinson, Mr. Patterson learned that Mr. Stein was not entitled to an abatement and brought the recantation letter to the town.
Selectmen Laurie Haynes and Martha Marchut said they would favor sending appeals to Knox County if the Assessment Review Board cannot be filled. The Selectmen agreed to inform the Assessment Review Board in writing of the group's search for members and the possibility of referring appeals to the county board.
No formal action to dissolve the Assessment Review Board was taken at the meeting.
