Surgoinsville board authorizes multiple grant applications, accepts donation for Creekside Park sign

At its Aug. 12 meeting the Surgoinsville Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to pursue several grant opportunities and accepted a donation to fund a park sign.
The board adopted Resolution 156‑2024 to participate in the Property Conservation Matching Grant Program on a motion from Alderman Mierek seconded by Alderman Bishop. Alderman Bishop moved — and Alderman Mierek seconded — that Fire Chief Shane Suthers and/or Assistant Fire Chief Denny Steele be authorized to apply for the 2025 Volunteer Firefighter Equipment & Training Grant; the board approved the authorization unanimously.
The board also authorized Alderman Collier to apply for the Tourism Enhancement Grant (Round 7) (motion by Alderman Bishop, second by Alderman Hoss) and authorized Alderman Bishop to apply for the BCBS Healthy Place Grant (motion by Alderman Mierek, second by Vice‑Mayor Jarnagin). The board accepted a donation from the Surgoinsville Medical Board to purchase a new double‑sided sign at Surgoinsville Creekside Park (motion by Alderman Bishop, second by Alderman Hoss), with unanimous approval on each item.
Discussion of FY2025 employee raises was tabled and no action was taken.
