Library director reports rising attendance, schedules summer programs and safety upgrades

Morgan Olson, director of the Unicoi County Public Library, told the trustees at the April 30 meeting that program attendance has been increasing and outlined several upcoming programs and facility upgrades.
Olson said the library’s summer reading program begins June 1 and staff will host a cookout on June 3. Collections are being re‑barcoded to update inventory and circulation tracking. The minutes note that AED and Narcan stations are scheduled for installation to improve on‑site emergency readiness; the Toney Foundation has indicated funding support for safety equipment and for new carpet, and the board will ask the Town of Erwin to assist with carpet payment.
Olson reported technical problems with the TLC library system and said the library is working with TLC to resolve the issues; oversight and standardization efforts are being coordinated by OWL across the regional libraries. The library has requested a grant for the community garden irrigation system. Because CSX no longer owns the building and parking adjacent to the library, Olson said staff will reach out to the new owner to request use of the parking lot during the Apple Festival for fundraising.
Jennifer Breuer, director of the Holston River Regional Library, reported separately that a trustee workshop will be held May 14, staff will have a LAMP training on May 28, a new library in Gray will open next month, and that trustee Terry Wise received his certification.
Next steps recorded in the minutes include pursuing the community garden grant, coordinating TLC troubleshooting with OWL, scheduling installations, and reaching out to the adjacent property owner about festival parking.
