Unicoi County library board approves budget revision as year-to-date shortfall continues

The Unicoi County Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously May 28 to adopt a revised budget after Treasurer Jan Bowden reported higher-than-expected personnel costs during the fiscal year.
Bowden presented the April financial report showing $9,033.04 in revenue for the month and $185,077.24 year to date. April expenses were $19,872.66, bringing year-to-date expenses to $188,157.13; net revenue for the month was -$10,839.62 and year to date was -$3,079.89. President Cathy Griffith and Director Morgan Olson provided an updated balance sheet showing current assets of $26,189.48.
Trustees were told the overrun resulted in part from unexpected maternity leave and additional vacation time that required paying staff for coverage. On a motion by Jan Bowden and second by Stana Donnelly, the board approved the budget revision unanimously.
The board also reviewed foundation and related accounts during the meeting. Griffith reported that the UCPL Foundation held $27,191.04 in an MCB account and $346,341.59 in a Raymond James investment account as of the end of April; the foundation sent a final $20,000 donation for the fiscal year in May. The Toney Foundation’s bank account balance was reported at $40,104.76 at the end of April.
