Library, fire and public-works updates; council tables accounting switch and approves shed permit

At the Sept. 8 meeting the Steamboat Rock City Council reviewed reports from the library, fire department and public works, and handled several small items of new business.
Library representative Johnnie Ogden submitted a written report noting 310 patrons in August, that children’s programming resumes in September, that a toilet was repaired by Tjarks and that bids for a library water softener were reviewed but the board declined purchase due to cost.
Scott Williams reported for the fire department that the department responded to a Labor Day fire on the east edge of Steamboat Rock with assistance from Eldora, Ackley and Wellsburg. He said the department used a torpedo device for the first time with good results; he requested replacement of a glow plug on the grass rig, new tires for the pumper truck (which will require council approval before purchase), and gutter cleaning/repairs at the fire station. Williams also noted upcoming driver training.
Public works representative Dave reported plans to repair the clarifier pump and then the aeration basin once parts pricing is obtained. He said water testing is being submitted on time, that the test numbers are better, and that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is providing time for repairs contingent on continued updates from the city.
In new business, applicant Sandy Trampe requested a permit for a shed. Councilmember Marc Havens moved to approve the permit; Councilmember Travis Hollander seconded and the motion passed on a recorded 2-to-1 vote. The meeting record does not identify which councilmember voted no.
City Clerk Valeria Kjormoe presented information about switching accounting to the ClerkBooks accounting module, noting a future web-based QuickBooks transition would not suit city government needs. The council tabled the ClerkBooks proposal to give members time to review the information packet and scheduled the item for future discussion.
Marvin Veld asked to add locating a curb stop at a property now up for sale to a future agenda. The meeting adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
